La Roche-en-Ardenne
La Roche-en-Ardenne
"LA ROCHE is the centrepiece of a breathtaking panorama that remains forever etched in the memory of those fortunate enough to have seen it. I have never left this delightful place without a deep sense of regret, blessed as it is with nature’s most varied gifts and offering such a wonderful place to stay and unwind." (M.A. Perk)
The Battle of the Ardennes Museum
Just a few days were enough, in December 1944 and January 1945, to almost wipe the town of La Roche off the map. The American artillery and air force were tasked with destroying all bridges in order to stop the German tanks. More than 115 civilians, sometimes entire families, lost their lives. A memorial plaque bearing all their names can be found on the wall of the Jamotte care home. Among the victims were also an aunt and a niece of Queen Paola Ruffo di Calabria.
A new experience every day
There is plenty to do in La Roche-en-Ardenne. You can go walking, mountain biking, canoeing, kayaking and enjoy various other sporting activities. A signposted 6 km walk (no. 4), called "Le Diable Château", leads to the wildlife park. This 10-hectare woodland park is home to around thirty animal species native to our forests, including wild boar, red deer, roe deer and five wolves. The park also features a large children’s playground, a sun terrace, a bar and several picnic tables. La Roche’s tourist train takes you to some of the town’s most beautiful spots. It departs from La Place du Bronze and stops, among other places, at 'La Corniche de Deister', where you can enjoy a magnificent view over the valley. Every Wednesday in July and August, the train takes you to Marcourt, where the local market featuring regional products and artisan delicacies provides the perfect setting for an enjoyable evening.
